when u upgrade ur system u keep ur files and everything the only thing that change is that before u have let say xp or vista and after u upgrade u are gonna have a new version as w7 but u can only upgrade with a new version of windowns u cant upgrade from vista to xp or w7 to vista
Upgrade keeps all your files and programs for you. You should only have to reinstall a couple things like antivirus software. You’re a little more likely to run into problems with leftovers from your old installation, however. As the software is still in testing, you’re also more likely to encounter slowdowns or crashes, too.
Custom is a fresh install, and lets you redo partitions, format, etc. You’ll have to reinstall all your programs and settings after the installation. If Windows 7 installs as it should, it will essentially move your prior installation to a folder called “windows.old” in your root directory. You should still be able to access your old files and settings files if you forget to back something up first, but you still won’t be able to run programs from it.
It would normally be recommended to do a fresh (custom) install after backing up everything from your prior installation, and to reinstall all your programs from scratch.
And though it may be a bit of a pain to reinstall things, a fresh install should go in quicker, while the upgrade can take hours longer as it transfers everything over on its own.
